Answering Your Team's Objections to Fair Chance Hiring

Liability, insurance, customer trust, crew reaction — the four concerns that come up every time, and honest answers to each.

What about liability?

Negligent hiring claims turn on whether you knew of a specific, job-relevant risk and ignored it. A documented individualized assessment is protection. A blanket ban is not, and it carries its own discrimination exposure.

Our insurance will not allow it

Ask your carrier directly rather than assuming. Federal bonding exists to cover theft and dishonesty losses during the early employment period at no cost to you.

Customers will react

Customers see the work. In trades and service businesses, quality and showing up on time drive reputation — not personnel files they never see.

How do I tell the crew?

You generally do not. A hire's record is confidential personnel information. Hold everyone to the same standards and the question rarely comes up.
