Handle the logistics first

Transportation, the first-paycheck gap, work boots, and tools sink more new hires than skill gaps do. Ask about all four in week one and solve what you can.

Assign one person, not a department

Give every new hire a named point of contact who can answer a question without it becoming a formal HR matter. This costs nothing and cuts early turnover more than any policy.

Put the supervision calendar on the schedule

If someone checks in with a parole officer every other Tuesday morning, put it on the schedule now. Planned absences are logistics. Surprise absences look like unreliability.
